Congress Takes the Lead in Chhattisgarh Elections Amidst Intense Populist Campaign, BJP Faces Challenges

In the fiercely contested Chhattisgarh assembly elections, the ruling Congress party has emerged as a front-runner, leveraging a series of populist promises. Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress has been actively rolling out welfare schemes, including a caste census, housing for the poor, farm loan waivers, and increased paddy prices, overshadowing the main opposition, BJP. The political landscape is further complicated by the involvement of smaller parties, potentially leading to a vote split that could influence the outcome in this traditionally bipolar state.

Congress’s proactive approach in making populist announcements, combined with its prominent leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, has set the stage for a challenging contest. In contrast, the BJP is grappling with devising strategies to counter Congress’s campaign promises. The upcoming release of BJP’s manifesto is anticipated to unveil measures aimed at countering Congress’s key proposals, particularly related to paddy prices, which had significant impact in the 2018 elections.

Chhattisgarh, historically a Congress stronghold, witnessed a shift in power in 2003 due to a vote split caused by political veteran V. C. Shukla’s move to NCP. However, in the recent past, Congress regained its foothold, securing a majority of 68 seats out of 90 in the 2018 elections. The BJP, aiming to overturn its fortunes, has fielded experienced leaders and introduced new faces, banking on the anti-incumbency sentiment in several constituencies.

The electoral scenario is further complicated by the involvement of smaller parties, including Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J), Aam Aadmi Party, Chhattisgarh Sarva Adivasi Samaj, and Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP). While Congress’s dominance in tribal Bastar and Surguja regions faces challenges, the central plains witness a fierce competition for OBC votes, particularly from the dominant Sahu community. Caste equations, local anti-incumbency factors, and constituency-specific strategies play a crucial role in shaping the electoral dynamics.

All eyes are now on the release of BJP’s manifesto, which is expected to unveil its counter-strategies and address key issues raised by Congress. With an array of factors influencing voter sentiment, the Chhattisgarh elections are poised for an intense showdown, with smaller parties potentially holding the key to the final outcome.
