El Salvador Implements Entry Fee for Indian Tourists: Here’s Why

El Salvador, a North American country known for its picturesque landscapes including over 100 volcanoes, beaches like El Tunco and La Libertad, and vibrant nightlife, recently made headlines by imposing an entry fee of USD 1,000 (Rs 83,219) for travelers from India and 50 African nations. In addition to this fee, visitors from these countries are required to pay a total of USD 1,130 (Rs 94,038), including value-added tax (VAT), to enter the country. The new regulation came into effect on October 23.

El Salvador’s authorities stated that the imposition of this fee was aimed at addressing the issue of uncontrolled immigration to the United States via their country. As part of this measure, airlines operating services to El Salvador are required to report daily on travelers carrying passports from India and the specified African nations. The funds collected from the entry fee will be utilized to enhance facilities at El Salvador International Airport, according to official statements.

Diplomatic experts have noted that this move by El Salvador mirrors global efforts by governments and airlines to tackle immigration challenges by introducing restrictions on international travel. The country witnessed approximately 3.2 million immigrants arriving during the financial year 2023, highlighting the significance of this measure in managing immigration issues.

El Salvador, boasting attractions such as the highest volcano, Santa Ana, archaeological parks like Cihuatan, Joya de Ceren, and Tazumal, known for its depiction of ancient Mayan civilization, remains a captivating destination despite the new entry regulations. Renowned for its coffee varieties, including Pacas and Pacamara, El Salvador was once the world’s fourth-largest coffee producer, showcasing its unique offerings despite its modest land area.
