Kerala MVD Expands ‘Fancy’ Number Category, Aims for Rs 37 Crore Revenue

The Kerala Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) has made a significant move by expanding its ‘fancy’ number category, adding 226 additional numbers. This decision is accompanied by a planned price hike set to take effect in January. The inclusion of these numbers aims not only to provide more options to vehicle owners but also to boost revenue for the department.

The ‘fancy’ number category includes unique and sought-after combinations that individuals often desire for their vehicles. With the addition of 226 more numbers, the total count in this category now stands at 351. The rates for these fancy numbers vary, ranging from Rs 3,000 to Rs 1 lakh. For instance, the coveted number 0001 will now cost Rs 1 lakh, while 0777 is priced at Rs 50,000, and 0003 at Rs 10,000.

The existing list previously consisted of 125 numbers, with 16 among them priced at Rs 25,000 each. However, the recent expansion has increased the count of Rs 25,000 priced numbers to 22. It’s important to note that these rates may see further increases based on demand, triggering an auction process for highly sought-after numbers.

This move is anticipated to bring in substantial revenue for the MVD, with an estimated amount of at least Rs 37.33 crore. The ‘fancy’ number category not only allows vehicle owners to personalize their vehicles but also serves as a revenue-generating avenue for the motor vehicle department.

The decision to expand the ‘fancy’ number category aligns with the MVD’s strategy to capitalize on the popularity and demand for unique vehicle registration numbers. The department’s proactive approach to this aspect is expected to positively impact its financial resources and provide additional options for vehicle owners seeking distinctive registration numbers.
