28th IFFK Inaugurated with Solidarity for War-Torn Palestine

The 28th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) commenced with a powerful expression of solidarity for the people of war-torn Palestine. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the festival virtually, emphasizing its unique commitment to standing with the struggles of the Palestinian people. The ‘Spirit of Cinema’ Award was conferred upon Kenyan artist Wanuri Kahiu, symbolizing the state’s dedication to supporting those advocating for freedom and expression. The festival, spanning eight days, will feature 175 international films from 81 countries. Over 12,000 delegates are expected to attend, with diverse sections such as international competition, Malayalam Today, and special packages like anti-colonization and The Female Gaze. Noted Polish director Krzysztof Zanussi will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, and various cultural events and art shows are planned.

The inaugural movie, ‘Good Bye Julia,’ marked Sudan’s first selection for the Cannes Film Festival. The festival will also showcase a Kerala Film Market, offering a business-to-business platform for the Malayalam film industry. As part of the festival, the Kerala Film Development Corporation (KSFDC) organized a cine expo and will feature a ‘Country Focus’ on Cuba, contemporary masters, neo-Latin movies, and The Female Gaze. The film winning the ‘Suvarna Chakoram’ award will receive a cash prize of Rs. 20 lakhs. Tagore Theatre will host the main events, while cultural and art shows will take place at Manaveeyam Veedhi, Kerala’s first nightlife center. The 28th IFFK promises to be a vibrant celebration of global cinema and cultural diversity.
