Google Maps Unveils India-Specific Features, Including Live View Walking and Local Train Support

Google has introduced several new features for Google Maps in India, aiming to provide a richer and more immersive experience tailored to the country’s diverse mobility needs. These features include Live View walking navigation in 3,000 cities, Lens in Maps for utilizing the phone camera for local information (set to arrive by January 2024), fuel-efficient routing with a green leaf symbol (available in over 20 cities from January 2024), and Where Is My Train support for Mumbai local trains. The Where Is My Train feature will also add support for Kolkata local trains. Address descriptors will be introduced in early 2024. Google Maps aims to enhance navigation, transportation, and visual information for users in India.

During the Building for India event in New Delhi, Google Maps introduced features specifically designed for the Indian market. Live View walking navigation will be available in 3,000 cities, initially on Android devices and later on iOS. The Lens in Maps feature, integrating Google Lens support, is set to launch by January 2024. Fuel-efficient routing, denoted by a green leaf symbol, will be introduced in January 2024 and is expected to cover more than 20 cities. The Where Is My Train feature will soon support Mumbai local trains, followed by support for Kolkata local trains. Address descriptors will also be integrated into Google Maps in early 2024. These updates aim to provide a more visual and immersive experience for users and address the diverse mobility needs in India.
