Alarming Rise in POCSO Cases in Kerala Over Eight Years; Thiruvananthapuram Records Highest Numbers

Over the span of eight years in Kerala, child sexual exploitation cases under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses) Act have more than doubled. In 2016, there were 2,131 cases, and by 2023, the number had surged to 4,641. The sharp increase, particularly noticeable from 2018, involves culprits ranging from teachers and school vehicle drivers to family members and domestic workers. Notably, Thiruvananthapuram recorded the highest number of cases in 2023, with 601 reported incidents.

The perpetrators include both men and women, and instances of exploitation often involve intimidation and enticement. In response to this concerning trend, advocates emphasize the importance of educating children both at home and in schools about inappropriate touching, fostering open communication. Under the POCSO Act, the punishment for sexual offenses against children ranges from three years to life imprisonment, along with fines. The severity of the penalty depends on factors such as the offender’s position, the nature of the offense, and the child’s age. Creating awareness, educating children, and collaborative efforts by authorities are deemed crucial in addressing and preventing such cases.
