Kozhikode Emerges as the New Footwear Export Hub of India

Kozhikode is emerging as a potential hub for India’s footwear industry, experiencing a notable 38% surge in footwear exports during the final quarter of 2023 compared to the previous year. Despite facing challenges such as the temporary closure of nearly half of the 150 footwear shops in Kozhikode and its vicinity due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this export growth signals a positive trend for the local industry. According to a report by the Kerala Exports Forum, the majority of these exports are destined for countries like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and Oman, contributing to the central government’s vision of positioning Kozhikode as a prominent footwear hub in the country, even amid stiff competition from the Chinese footwear industry.

The president of the Kerala Exports Forum and Director of VKC group, K M Hameed Ali, highlighted the challenges posed by the intense competition from the Chinese footwear market, which has kept footwear prices relatively stable over the past decade. To further boost export numbers, experts suggest a focus on innovative footwear designs, emphasizing the potential for continued growth in this sector. This positive trajectory demonstrates resilience and adaptability in Kozhikode’s footwear industry, paving the way for its increased prominence on the national stage.
