According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India (GOI), simple modifications in your diet can go a long way in protecting you from heat-related illnesses. Stay Hydrated: With our bodies composed of 60 to 75% water, maintaining hydration levels becomes paramount, especially during the summer when water loss increases. Consultant nutritionist Rupali Datta emphasizes the importance of staying hydrated to combat the heatwave effectively. Even a 4% loss of water can lead to dehydration, with fatal consequences at 15%.

Opt for Seasonal Foods: During the summer, it’s advisable to prioritize seasonal foods, fresh vegetables, and plant-based options over heavy proteins and fibers. These foods aid digestion and prevent gut issues, dehydration, and indigestion, as recommended by the Health Ministry.

Choose Cooling Foods and Drinks: When venturing outdoors in the scorching heat, it’s essential to carry foods and beverages that help maintain body temperature and freshness. Light and cool foods, whole fruits, and citrus drinks are ideal choices, reducing the risk of food contamination and foodborne illnesses.

Substitute Hot Beverages with Homemade Coolers: Caffeinated drinks like coffee and tea can exacerbate fluid loss in the body due to their diuretic properties. Nutritionist Rupali Datta suggests limiting caffeine intake and opting for homemade coolers like nimbu paani, chaas, and aam panna to maintain electrolyte balance and hydration.

Prioritize Freshly Cooked Meals: To minimize the risk of foodborne illnesses, nutritionist Dr. Anju Sood recommends consuming freshly cooked meals daily. When packing meals, ensure they cool to room temperature before storing them in insulated containers to preserve freshness.
