Multiple Injured in Shooting at Detroit Splash Pad

Several people were injured after a shooter opened fire at a splash pad in a Detroit suburb on Saturday afternoon, where families had gathered to escape the summer heat. According to Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard, nine or ten individuals, including an 8-year-old child, sustained gunshot wounds. A potential suspect was contained in a nearby home, which was surrounded by law enforcement.

The shooting occurred around 5 p.m. in Rochester Hills. The shooter allegedly drove to the park, walked to the splash pad, and fired up to 28 rounds, reloading multiple times. Authorities recovered a handgun and three empty magazines at the scene.

The area was cordoned off by police, with numerous yellow evidence markers visible among colorful folding chairs. Authorities maintained an active crime scene and advised people to avoid the area, though it was later deemed safe for those sheltering in the park to leave.

The victims were transported to hospitals, but their conditions remain unknown. The situation inside the home with the possible suspect is unclear, as law enforcement attempts to make contact.

Rochester Hills, located about 15 miles south of Oxford, has been struck by another tragedy, recalling the 2021 Oxford high school shooting. Sheriff Bouchard described the event as a “gut punch” for the county, expressing the community’s ongoing struggle with past tragedies. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her heartbreak over the incident and stated she was in contact with local officials.
