Mohanlal’s ‘Empuraan’ Becomes First Malayalam Film to Debut on IMAX

Mohanlal’s upcoming action thriller L2: Empuraan is making history as the first-ever Malayalam film to be released in IMAX. The much-anticipated sequel to Lucifer is set to hit theatres worldwide on March 27, 2025, with screenings available in multiple languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada.

The legendary actor took to social media to share the exciting news with his fans. Posting the official film poster on Instagram, he expressed his pride in this milestone achievement, stating that the IMAX release marks the beginning of a new chapter for Malayalam cinema on a global scale. The announcement has further fueled anticipation among fans eager to witness the grand spectacle on the big screen.

Mohanlal, who recently wrapped up shooting for Hridayapoorvam directed by Sathyan Anthikad, has been actively promoting L2: Empuraan through social media, sharing behind-the-scenes moments and updates to keep the audience engaged.

Adding to the buzz, director Prithviraj Sukumaran revealed on March 18 that Tamil superstar Rajinikanth was the first to watch the film’s trailer. According to Prithviraj, Rajinikanth was highly impressed and praised the trailer, heightening expectations for the film’s release.

As per IANS, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has officially cleared L2: Empuraan with a UA 16+ rating, approving a final runtime of 179.52 minutes. The film follows the gripping continuation of Lucifer, with Prithviraj reprising his role as Zayed Masood, a powerful mercenary leading the enigmatic Kureshi-Ab’ram syndicate.
