India bid farewell to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday night. His funeral was conducted with full state honours at Nigambodh Ghat along the Yamuna river. The cremation ceremony took place at approximately 12:45 pm and was attended by a host of political dignitaries, international representatives, and admirers.
Prominent attendees included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Draupadi Murmu, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, and BJP President J.P. Nadda. The Congress party was represented by Sonia Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and MP K.C. Venugopal. International figures such as Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Mauritius’ Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful were also present to pay their respects.
Earlier in the day, Dr. Singh’s body was transported from his Motilal Road residence to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters for public viewing. A large number of party workers and leaders gathered to catch a final glimpse of the beloved leader. His remains were later taken to Nigambodh Ghat in a solemn cortege.
As a mark of respect, the Indian government has declared a week-long national mourning, suspending all official events. Amid discussions regarding land allocation for Dr. Singh’s memorial, the central government has assured that a site will be provided to honor the legacy of the esteemed statesman.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, remembered for his contributions to India’s economic reforms and political leadership, will forever remain an iconic figure in the nation’s history.
