Starbucks is implementing a significant corporate restructuring plan, announcing the layoff of 1,100 employees worldwide. This move is part of an initiative led by CEO Brian Niccol to simplify operations, enhance efficiency, and foster better integration within the company. In a letter addressed to employees, Niccol emphasized the need to eliminate unnecessary complexity and increase accountability.
Affected employees will be notified by mid-day on Tuesday, while several hundred unfilled positions will also be removed as part of the restructuring process. The layoffs primarily target corporate staff, sparing frontline workers such as baristas, warehouse employees, and roasting staff.
Niccol, who joined Starbucks last autumn, has been focused on revitalizing the company amid declining sales. He has prioritized improving service speed—particularly during peak hours—and restoring Starbucks outlets as vibrant community hubs. His broader strategy includes simplifying the menu, optimizing ordering algorithms, and removing redundant management layers that slow down decision-making.
Starbucks has faced challenges in its major markets. In the U.S., customers have expressed frustration over rising prices and long wait times. Meanwhile, in China, the coffee giant is grappling with increased competition from more affordable alternatives.
Despite a 2% decline in global same-store sales for the 2024 fiscal year, Starbucks has recently shown signs of recovery. Niccol’s initiatives, including eliminating extra charges for non-dairy milk and improving order processing, have contributed to an uptick in customer traffic. These efforts have been well-received by investors, with Starbucks’ stock rising slightly following the announcement.
As the restructuring takes effect, Starbucks hopes to build a more agile and customer-focused organization, positioning itself for long-term growth in a competitive market.
