NPS Systematic Withdrawal Plan: A Smart Option for Retirees with Substantial Savings

Flexible Withdrawal Options Make NPS a Cost-Effective and Growth-Oriented Choice for Retirement Planning

The National Pension System (NPS) has introduced a systematic withdrawal plan, offering retirees an efficient way to manage their retirement corpus. This feature is especially beneficial for those with a significant savings pool, allowing their funds to grow while providing flexible withdrawal options.

Previously, NPS subscribers exiting the scheme could not withdraw the 60% corpus systematically, after purchasing the mandatory 40% annuity. Now, with the introduction of the systematic lumpsum withdrawal (SLW) feature, retirees can keep 60% of their funds invested in NPS, enabling steady withdrawals while the corpus continues to grow.

Sriram Iyer, CEO of HDFC Pension Management, highlights the advantages of this approach: “The NPS allows account holders to stay invested and contribute up to age 75. At this point, subscribers can withdraw the remaining 60% tax-free while enjoying potentially higher annuity rates due to their age.”

This systematic withdrawal plan suits retirees aiming to manage post-retirement expenses while deferring annuity payouts to secure better monthly returns. High net-worth individuals, in particular, benefit from this flexibility, as they may prefer to delay withdrawals for enhanced growth and improved annuity rates.

Tax implications for these withdrawals remain subject to interpretation. Some experts suggest that the gains portion may be taxed like mutual funds, while others believe the tax-free 60% corpus may allow tax-free systematic withdrawals.

For individuals seeking liquidity and flexibility in retirement, the NPS tier-2 scheme offers an additional option for accessible funds while benefiting from the NPS’s robust growth potential.
