New Delhi: In a bid to provide financial relief to workers in the unorganized sector, the central government has announced an increase in minimum wage rates through a revision of the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA). The Ministry of Labour and Employment made this announcement on Thursday, aiming to help workers manage the rising costs of living.
Under the revised rates, workers in area “A,” including those engaged in construction, sweeping, cleaning, loading, and unloading, will see new minimum wages starting from October 1, 2024. For unskilled workers, the wage will be Rs 783 per day (equating to Rs 20,358 per month). Semi-skilled workers will earn Rs 868 per day (Rs 22,568 per month), while skilled and clerical workers, as well as watch and ward staff without arms, will receive Rs 954 per day (Rs 24,804 per month). Highly skilled workers and watch and ward personnel with arms will benefit from the highest wage of Rs 1,035 per day (Rs 26,910 per month).
The revision in minimum wages is expected to benefit a wide range of workers employed in sectors like construction, housekeeping, mining, agriculture, and security services. This new wage policy will bring relief to many, helping them manage the economic challenges brought on by rising inflation. The last wage revision took place in April 2024, and this update reflects the government’s continued commitment to supporting low-wage earners in the central sphere establishments.
