Air gun-related crimes have been increasing in Kerala, fueled by the absence of licensing requirements for purchasing these weapons. The lack of regulation allows anyone to buy an air gun, contributing to a rise in dangerous incidents.
Recent tragedies include three fatalities linked to air guns: one in Changaramkulam (Malappuram), one in Haripad (Alappuzha), and one in Aluva (Ernakulam). While air guns generally fire pellets instead of bullets and may not cause severe injuries from a distance, close-range shots can be highly dangerous. In 2023 alone, there were 10 reported incidents involving air guns.
The issue gained further attention after a woman was injured by an air gun in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday at Vanchiyoor West Fort. Air guns, which use air pressure to fire sharp, pointed pellets, can cause serious harm if the pellets penetrate vital areas like the head or chest.
Originally intended for bird control, air guns are increasingly being misused against humans. They are easily accessible online, where buyers only need to present any form of identity card. Prices for air guns range from Rs 250 to Rs 25,000, and since no license is required, authorities lack accurate information about air gun ownership.
Moreover, there are concerns that some firearms, which legally require licenses, are being sold under the guise of air guns, further complicating the issue.
