Beirut, Lebanon: Israel escalated its military operations on Thursday, launching an airstrike on a Hezbollah facility in central Beirut, Lebanon, following the deaths of several Israeli soldiers in a border attack. This marks the second Israeli air raid on Beirut this week as tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, which is supported by Iran, continue to rise. In response, Iran launched its largest missile barrage yet against Israel, further intensifying the conflict. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Tehran of severe consequences for what he called a “big mistake.”
The airstrike on Hezbollah’s Beirut facility killed at least six individuals, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. Eyewitnesses reported loud explosions, and buildings in the area shook due to the impact. As Israel shifts focus from its Gaza operations to securing its northern border with Lebanon, it has also dealt significant blows to Hezbollah, including the recent killing of its leader, Hassan Nasrallah.
Ground clashes have also intensified in southern Lebanon, where Hezbollah forces claim to have destroyed Israeli tanks and forced troops to retreat. Israel, in turn, has staged incursions into Lebanon and urged civilians to evacuate several areas. Air raids on Beirut’s southern suburbs killed 46 people and injured 85, according to Lebanese authorities.
Iran retaliated with missile strikes, targeting Israel with a range of weapons, including hypersonic missiles. While most were intercepted, some caused injuries and property damage. Iran’s military chief warned of further retaliation if Israel continues its strikes. The escalating conflict, which began after Hamas’s October 7 attack, has prompted international concern, with calls for de-escalation from the United Nations and G7 nations.
Meanwhile, Lebanon continues to suffer heavy casualties, with nearly 2,000 people dead since the renewed hostilities began. The ongoing conflict has left Lebanese civilians fearful, while some view the devastation as a necessary sacrifice for Hezbollah’s cause.
