Kerala’s first eco-friendly astro tourism project is underway at Manjampothikunnu in Kasaragod, a region chosen for its minimal light pollution and pristine environment. Initially budgeted at Rs 4.97 crore, the project underwent revisions due to land constraints, leading to the removal of a musical fountain and telescope. A revised proposal of Rs 3.60 crore was approved in October 2022, paving the way for construction.
The project, expected to be completed by September this year, will feature a gatehouse, main building, rainwater harvesting system, landscaped gardens, walkways, a children’s play area, solar lamps, and CCTV cameras. Additional facilities like a selfie point, drinking water, and solid waste disposal systems will enhance the visitor experience.
Manjampothikunnu, accessible via Kalyan Road Muthappanthara and Anandashram Road, is already a popular spot for its scenic hills and the nearby Veeramaruthi temple. Authorities anticipate increased footfall once the astro tourism project is operational, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore the night sky while enjoying the natural beauty of the region.
