Malappuram: In a move aimed at enhancing the reach and service of public outlets, Kerala’s Food and Civil Supplies Minister GR Anil announced on Sunday that all Maveli Stores in the state will be upgraded into modern supermarkets. The announcement came during the inauguration of the newly upgraded Supplyco supermarket in Elamkulam, Perinthalmanna.
Minister Anil expressed the government’s unwavering commitment to improving the state-run Supplyco outlets. Since taking office, the minister noted, 113 stores have been revamped, with Elamkulam being the most recent addition. Despite facing financial constraints, the government has ensured that no stores have been closed, and no workers have been laid off.
Each month, Supplyco stores serve approximately 30 to 40 lakh people with subsidized goods, while ration shops cater to the monthly needs of 83 lakh families. The minister also emphasized Kerala’s success in curbing price hikes, noting that the state’s measures to control inflation have been unprecedented, shielding its citizens from the rising costs seen in other parts of India.
This initiative represents a significant step in improving the public distribution system, ensuring better access to essential goods for the people of Kerala while enhancing the efficiency and accessibility of government-run stores.
