United Nations : In the wake of the devastation caused by Typhoon Yagi, which claimed 290 lives and displaced millions in Vietnam, the United Nations has announced an emergency allocation of USD 2 million to aid recovery efforts. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the funds will be directed towards critical humanitarian needs, particularly in the hardest-hit provinces of Yen Bai and Lao Cai. Over 237,000 homes have been damaged, and the typhoon’s impact has left 3 million people grappling with severe challenges, including lack of shelter and poor access to clean water.
The financial support was made available through the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) by Acting UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Joyce Msuya. The money will be utilized by UN agencies such as the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), and UNICEF to deliver immediate relief, including emergency shelter, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services.
This critical aid arrives at a time when Vietnam’s national authorities continue to assess the full scale of the disaster, which struck northern Vietnam near the capital, Hanoi, on September 7. As Vietnam faces ongoing recovery challenges, international assistance is crucial in meeting the urgent needs of the affected communities, ensuring they receive essential services and life-saving resources as they begin to rebuild their lives.
