Vinícius Júnior and Aitana Bonmati Shine at FIFA’s “The Best” Awards

Celebrating excellence in football: Vinícius and Bonmati crowned as FIFA’s top players of the year

Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior and Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati were honored with FIFA’s “The Best” player awards for 2024 in a ceremony held in Doha. These accolades recognize their exceptional contributions to football over the past year.

Vinícius, who narrowly missed the Ballon d’Or to Manchester City’s Rodri, was elated to claim the prestigious FIFA award. Reflecting on his journey from humble beginnings in São Gonçalo, Brazil, he dedicated the honor to underprivileged children who dream of achieving greatness. “They tried to diminish me, but I’ve proven my worth,” he stated, addressing critics and celebrating his triumph. The 24-year-old enjoyed a stellar season, netting 24 goals in 39 matches, including a decisive goal in the Champions League final.

Bonmati, who replicated her Ballon d’Or success, expressed gratitude for her teammates and club. Her remarkable year included winning the Spanish league, Spanish cup, and Champions League with Barcelona. The Spanish midfielder emphasized teamwork in her acceptance speech, calling 2024 an unforgettable year.

Other notable winners included Carlo Ancelotti as best men’s coach, Emma Hayes as best women’s coach, and Emiliano Martínez and Alyssa Naeher for the goalkeeper awards. Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho claimed the FIFA Puskás Award for his stunning overhead goal, while Marta received the inaugural FIFA Marta Award for her iconic strike against Jamaica.

The winners were selected through a balanced voting system involving fans, national team captains and coaches, and media representatives, celebrating excellence in football from August 2023 to August 2024.
