A heated confrontation unfolded in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday after BJP MP Sambit Patra made a controversial remark comparing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma. The comment, which referenced a statement by Congress leader Shama Mohamed regarding Sharma’s fitness, immediately triggered strong objections from Congress members.
The remark was made during a discussion on supplementary demands for grants, excess grants, and the Manipur budget. Presiding over the session, Sandhya Rai assured that the statement would be expunged from the records. However, Congress MPs remained adamant in their protest, demanding an official retraction. Speaker Om Birla eventually stepped in, urging both the ruling party and the opposition to uphold the decorum of the House. Despite his intervention, the uproar continued, forcing a brief 10-minute adjournment.
When the session resumed, Speaker Om Birla criticized opposition members for challenging the Chair’s authority. Amid the escalating tensions, Sambit Patra stated that he had no objection to withdrawing his remark if it had caused offense to Rahul Gandhi or any other member of the House.
Congress leader K C Venugopal later raised concerns over inconsistencies in regulating personal attacks within parliamentary proceedings. He argued that while Speaker Om Birla takes corrective measures against inappropriate remarks, other presiding officers do not always enforce the same standards. In response, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju condemned unwarranted attacks on both fellow members and the Chair, emphasizing the need for constructive and respectful debates in the House.
The incident highlights the growing tension between the ruling and opposition parties, with both sides continuing to clash over parliamentary decorum and the limits of political rhetoric.
