Experts warn that losing even one hour of sleep each night can significantly impact your health, memory, and overall well-being. According to Dr. Sudhir Kumar from Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad, the human body requires 7-8 hours of sleep each night to maintain optimal health. Insufficient sleep can lead to a range of problems, including poor attention, diminished focus, impaired concentration, and memory issues.
Dr. Kumar emphasizes that losing just an hour of sleep may take up to four days to recover fully. Sleep deprivation not only affects cognitive functions but can also lead to headaches, anxiety, and stress. Those who do not get enough rest are more prone to making poor decisions and experiencing driving errors, increasing the risk of vehicle accidents.
Chronic sleep deprivation is linked to a higher risk of several serious health conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, obesity, heart attacks, strokes, depression, dementia, erectile dysfunction, and infections. While maintaining a regular sleep schedule and achieving 7-8 hours of sleep nightly is crucial, Dr. Kumar also notes that oversleeping (more than 9 hours) is detrimental to health.
Proper sleep helps lower the risk of insulin resistance, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes, and is essential for managing cholesterol levels. Additionally, good sleep is vital for preventing mental health issues such as schizophrenia, depression, and stress.
