New Delhi: Strong tremors were felt across Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad and surrounding areas on Thursday morning after an earthquake of magnitude 4.4 struck Jhajjar district in Haryana, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The earthquake occurred at 9:04 am IST, with a depth of 10 kilometres, the NCS confirmed in an official post on X. The coordinates of the quake were registered at latitude 28.63°N and longitude 76.68°E. “EQ of M: 4.4, On: 10/07/2025 09:04:50 IST, Lat: 28.63 N, Long: 76.68 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Jhajjar, Haryana,” NCS posted.
Tremors were reportedly felt in several parts of the National Capital Region (NCR), prompting momentary panic among residents, who stepped out of their homes and buildings as a precaution. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
This is not the first seismic activity in the region this year. On February 17, 2024, a magnitude 4.0 earthquake was recorded near New Delhi at a depth of 5 km, causing early morning tremors.
Experts warn that such events highlight the seismic vulnerability of the region. Delhi lies in Seismic Zone IV, classified by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority as a “High Damage Risk Zone”, indicating a potential for moderate to strong earthquakes.
Yesterday, July 9, heavy rains pummeled Delhi, causing widespread waterlogging on major roads. Reports revealed that rush hour commuters found themselves stuck in traffic early Thursday morning as well. Some reports said that at least six flights had been diverted last evening owing to bad weather — this included four flights to Jaipur and two to Lucknow.
