Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to receive the Dominica Award of Honour, the highest civilian accolade awarded by the Commonwealth of Dominica, in appreciation of his significant contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic and his ongoing efforts to bolster relations between India and Dominica. President Sylvanie Burton of Dominica will present the award to PM Modi during the India-CARICOM Summit, scheduled from November 19 to 21, 2024, in Georgetown, Guyana.
The honour highlights India’s substantial support to Dominica during a critical period in February 2021, when India donated 70,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to aid Dominica’s vaccination drive. This gesture not only supported Dominica’s public health but also empowered the nation to assist neighboring Caribbean countries in their COVID-19 response.
In addition to pandemic support, the award recognizes India’s broader contributions to Dominica, notably in healthcare, education, and IT development under Modi’s leadership. His advocacy for climate resilience and sustainable development on the world stage further underscores his commitment to tackling global challenges—a dedication that has strengthened the bond between the two nations. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit of Dominica expressed that this award is a gesture of gratitude for PM Modi’s support, which has benefited Dominica and the wider Caribbean region.
