Christian communities across Kerala and beyond observed Maundy Thursday, also known as Pesaha Vyazham, in solemn remembrance of Jesus Christ’s Last Supper. Churches belonging to the Jacobite and Orthodox denominations held special prayers, Holy Qurbana (Mass), and unique rituals to mark the occasion.
At the St. George Cathedral in the Kanthe Seminary, Thiruvankulam, the Catholicos of the Jacobite Syrian Church, Baselios Thomas I, led the special Maundy Thursday service. Meanwhile, in Kothamangalam’s Mar Thoma Cheriapally, the traditional foot-washing ceremony is scheduled for later in the day, with the Catholicos of the East presiding. In Vazhoor, Kottayam, the Catholicos of the Orthodox Church, Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, led the Pesaha services at St. Peter’s Orthodox Church.
In homes, families partake in the symbolic cutting and sharing of Pesaha bread (appam), a deeply rooted tradition that mirrors the Last Supper. From this evening, believers enter a period of intense prayers and reflection, marking the sacred Holy Week that culminates in Easter Sunday. Churches and Christian households are now actively preparing for the joyful celebration of Christ’s resurrection, which stands at the heart of Christian faith.
As the Holy Week progresses, the faithful embrace a time of spiritual renewal, self-examination, and devotion. Maundy Thursday not only commemorates Jesus’ act of humility and service but also serves as a reminder of love, sacrifice, and unity within the Christian community. With Good Friday and Easter approaching, churches remain centers of prayer and gathering, while families prepare both spiritually and traditionally for the upcoming resurrection celebrations.
