THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 18th edition of the International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK), the state’s premier event celebrating non-fiction and short-format cinema, will be held in the capital city from October 2 to 7. State Tourism, Culture, and Film Minister P.C. Vishnunath announced that preparations are already in full swing to host the six-day cultural extravaganza at the iconic Kairali, Sree, and Nila theatre complex.
IDSFFK holds a distinct reputation as India’s only state-government-organized international film festival dedicated entirely to documentaries and short films. Over nearly two decades, it has evolved into a vital global stage for independent filmmakers, groundbreaking cinema, and socially impactful storytelling. Adding to its prestige, the festival enjoys an elite global status as an Oscar-qualifying event. Documentaries that clinch top honors here earn a direct ticket for Academy Award consideration, drawing top-tier cinematic talent from across the globe.
Anticipation for this year’s edition is exceptionally high, with the organizers receiving a massive pool of 1,741 entries from both domestic and international filmmakers. A meticulous screening process is currently underway to lock in the final lineup for the competition, non-competition, and Malayalam non-competition categories. To maintain absolute transparency and adhere to global standards, separate expert selection panels have been set up to evaluate submissions across diverse genres, including Long Documentary, Short Documentary, Short Fiction, Animation, Music Video, and International Campus Films.
The Minister emphasized that the government is pulling out all the stops to ensure the festival meets international standards. Upgrades are being made across technical infrastructure, screening logistics, delegate hospitality, and academic forums to offer a seamless, world-class experience for visiting filmmakers and cinema enthusiasts alike.
