Thiruvananthapuram/Kasaragod: In anticipation of severe rainfall triggered by Cyclone Fengal, district authorities in Kasaragod, Thrissur, and Alappuzha have declared a holiday for all educational institutions on Tuesday. Malappuram district, however, has excluded professional colleges from the closure directive. Additionally, Thiruvananthapuram District Collector Anu Kumari has announced a holiday for government offices and educational institutions within the city corporation limits on December 3, coinciding with the annual Uroos festival.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Kasaragod is under an orange alert for Tuesday, indicating rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm. Meanwhile, red alerts for December 2 were issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, forecasting rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm. Orange alerts have been issued for districts like Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, and Palakkad, with yellow alerts covering areas such as Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kottayam.
The IMD predicts widespread rain or thundershowers across Kerala until December 7, accompanied by squally winds reaching up to 55 kmph along the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coast. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea during this period.
Potential impacts include reduced visibility, temporary traffic disruptions due to waterlogging or fallen trees, electricity outages, and damage to standing crops. Vulnerable areas may experience landslides or mudslides. The public is urged to follow traffic advisories, secure structures, and seek shelter during lightning or thunderstorms.
