Director Ranjith, a prominent figure in Malayalam cinema, is reportedly on the verge of resigning from his role as the chairman of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy. Adding to the controversy, visuals have surfaced showing that the government number plate has been removed from Ranjith’s official vehicle, further fueling speculation about his imminent departure.
The controversy took a serious turn after Bengali actress Sreelekha Mitra made allegations against Ranjith, accusing him of inappropriate behavior during the filming of the 2009-10 movie “Paleri Manikyam.” Mitra, who was initially involved in the production, claimed that Ranjith’s conduct made her feel unsafe and distressed, leading her to avoid staying at her hotel overnight.
Mitra’s allegations come at a time when the recently released Hema Committee report, which addresses issues of misconduct and harassment within the film industry, is under intense scrutiny. The actress disclosed that she had reported Ranjith’s behavior to documentary director Joshi but received no follow-up or support, leaving her feeling abandoned by the industry.
Mitra also alleged that her refusal to comply with Ranjith’s behavior led to her exclusion from further opportunities in Malayalam cinema, including the completion of “Paleri Manikyam.” She recounted that she was left without money for her return journey and had to travel home alone the next day.
