The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has informed Parliament that a total of 54 Indian citizens have been sentenced to death by courts in eight foreign countries. Of these, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) holds the highest number, with 29 individuals awaiting execution.
- UAE: 29 individuals
- Saudi Arabia: 12 individuals
- Malaysia: 6 individuals
- Kuwait: 3 individuals
- Indonesia: 1 individual
- Qatar: 1 individual
- United States: 1 individual
- Yemen: 1 individual
In response to concerns about these cases, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh emphasized the government’s commitment to the welfare of Indian nationals abroad. He stated that Indian missions and posts overseas provide comprehensive assistance to citizens facing legal challenges, including those sentenced to death. This support encompasses consular access through regular prison visits, coordination with local judicial and law enforcement authorities, and assistance in pursuing legal remedies such as appeals and mercy petitions.
Regarding executions of Indian nationals abroad in the past five years (2020-2024), the following countries have carried out such sentences:
- Kuwait: 26 executions
- Saudi Arabia: 9 executions
- Zimbabwe: 7 executions
- Malaysia: 5 executions
- Jamaica: 1 execution
The government continues to monitor these cases closely and remains dedicated to providing all possible assistance to Indian citizens facing legal challenges abroad. Efforts include diplomatic engagement with foreign governments, legal support, and, where applicable, negotiations for clemency or reduced sentences. The safety, security, and well-being of Indian nationals overseas remain top priorities for the Indian government
