After years of price stagnation, pepper farmers in Kerala’s Wayanad district are finally experiencing a much-needed boost as market rates surge significantly. The price of regular pepper has reached ₹700 per kilogram, with the superior “Wayanadan Gold” variety commanding up to ₹850 per kg in retail markets. In Kalpetta, traders like E.K. Ummer from VC Brothers confirmed the steady climb in prices, especially for high-grade pepper.
The upward trend in prices is driven by a drop in global production, particularly in major exporters like Vietnam and Sri Lanka, leading to increased demand for Indian pepper. In Kochi, prices are reportedly ₹10 higher than Wayanad, and Karnataka has also seen a spike, with prices soaring to ₹850 per kg.
This price improvement comes as a relief to farmers battling unpredictable weather and low yields. While crop losses were reported in drought-prone areas like Pulpally, many farmers who managed to bring their produce to market are now seeing profitable returns. The decline in cheaper imports has also given domestic farmers a competitive edge.
North Indian markets, which heavily influence pricing trends, are currently relying more on local produce, enhancing demand for Indian pepper. The upcoming Sri Lankan harvest, expected in May, may not impact prices drastically due to the inferior quality of their pepper compared to India’s.
Encouragingly, this year’s summer showers have been more consistent, helping protect pepper vines from the usual heat damage. Farmers are now placing their hopes on the early arrival of the monsoon by the end of May, which could ensure a healthy flowering phase and promise a better harvest next year. The combined factors of favorable pricing, improved climate conditions, and steady demand are breathing new life into pepper farming communities across Wayanad and beyond.
