Progress Update: Lotus-shaped Navi Mumbai Airport Nears Completion
The construction of the eagerly anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport is swiftly advancing, with authorities indicating significant progress. Set to be operational by March 31, 2025, approximately 63% of the project’s construction is already completed. Designed in the iconic shape of the lotus flower, India’s national symbol, the airport is poised to become a remarkable addition to the country’s infrastructure. Spearheaded by Adani Airport Holdings Limited, the ambitious project boasts a staggering budget of Rs 16,700 crore, following the Adani Group’s takeover from GVK Industries in 2021.
Initiated in 2018 to alleviate the strain on Mumbai International Airport, the Navi Mumbai Airport project is divided into four phases and spans across 1160 acres of land. With the first two phases aimed for completion by March 31, 2025, the airport’s full operation is anticipated by 2032. Notable milestones include the near-completion of hill levelling, alteration of the Ulwe River course, and filling of swamps. Moreover, essential infrastructure such as high transmission lines has been installed, while terminal and runway construction are in their final stages. Two expansive runways, each measuring 3700 meters in length and 60 meters in width, are underway, signifying the significant strides towards the airport’s grand unveiling.
