Private Bus Operators Call Off Indefinite Strike in Kerala After Talks with Government

In a significant development for daily commuters in Kerala, private bus operators have opted to call off their previously declared indefinite strike scheduled to begin on November 21. The joint committee of private bus owners engaged in discussions with Transport Minister Antony Raju, leading to a resolution.

As part of the agreement, the government has agreed to maintain permits for buses that operate services exceeding 140 kilometers. However, the request to revoke the mandatory seat belt rule for drivers was not accepted by Minister Antony Raju, although he expressed a willingness to reconsider the government order.

Moreover, the government committed to reviewing the student concession policy following an examination of the Ravi Raman Commission Report. Additionally, the decision regarding limited stops and ordinary buses will be subject to a review process.

This decision comes after private bus operators initiated a strike on October 30, emphasizing demands for an increase in ticket prices and other concessions. The operators had warned of an indefinite strike starting November 21 if the government did not address their concerns. The recent discussions and agreements have averted the strike, providing relief to the public and ensuring the continued operation of private bus services in the state.
