Possible Power Production Impact as Idukki Dam Water Levels Decrease

The deficiency in rainfall during Kerala’s southwest monsoon has had a significant negative effect on power generation in the state’s major dams. Despite a recent increase in power production, the state is worried about water levels and is considering purchasing costly external electricity.

Presently, the Idukki dam contains only 31.24% of its water capacity. The latest measurement at 5 pm on Saturday shows the water level at 2331.31 ft, notably lower than the 2386 ft recorded at the same time the previous year. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) may be compelled to cease power generation if the water level falls below 2280 ft.

In an effort to maintain water levels in dams and minimize power generation, the state government is inclined towards obtaining more affordable electricity from a centralized pool.
