Summer Rain Forecast Brings Relief from Sweltering Heat in Kerala

The weather forecast indicates that summer rains will bring relief from the scorching heat starting from Thursday. Temperatures have already dropped by three degrees compared to last week, offering some respite from the intense heat. The rainfall is expected to intensify in Kerala as a Cyclonic Circulation formed over Telangana moves towards Karnataka. The rain is forecasted to last for four days, with rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115 mm during this period. It will commence in the central and northern districts before spreading to the southern districts. A yellow alert has been issued for Ernakulam district on Wednesday and for Wayanad on Thursday. Additionally, severe thunderstorms are also possible during this time.

In Palakkad, where temperatures soared to 41.8 degrees Celsius, the temperature dropped to 38 degrees Celsius the following day. Similarly, the temperature in Thrissur, which reached 40 degrees Celsius, decreased to 36.6 degrees Celsius. Other districts also experienced a drop in temperature by up to two degrees.

Palakkad district may still experience temperatures of up to 39 degrees Celsius until Wednesday, while it will be around 37 degrees Celsius in Kollam, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Kannur, and Kozhikode districts. Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Malappuram, and Kasaragod districts are expected to see temperatures around 36 degrees Celsius. The El Nino phenomenon, which contributed to the severe heat, is anticipated to change by mid-May.

Additionally, the Kallakkadal phenomenon, characterized by a swell surge formed by strong winds in the Indian Ocean, is expected to continue along the Kerala coast. This phenomenon will result in extreme waves of up to 1.5 meters on the south coast, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, and the south Tamil Nadu coast, leading to a strong sea attack. An orange alert has been issued for these areas, and fishing activities are prohibited.

Yesterday, three houses partially collapsed in Poonthura, Thiruvananthapuram, due to the sea attack. Three families were relocated to Thrikkunnapuzha, Alappuzha. Sea erosion was also reported at Chantakadappuram in Eriyad Panchayat in Kodungallur Taluk, Arappakadav, Puthiya Road, and Perinjanam Beach in Edavilangu Panchayat, with five houses flooded. Approximately 50 people are currently residing in camps in Alappuzha, Thiruvananthapuram, and Thrissur districts.

The total expected rainfall for this summer is 359 mm, but so far, only 58.7 mm of rain has been received from March 1 to yesterday, indicating a 64% decrease in rainfall compared to the expected amount.
