Riyadh Secures Hosting Rights for 2030 World Expo

In a significant win, Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, has been selected to host the 2030 World Expo, beating out competitors Rome and Busan. The decision was made by the Bureau International des Expositions, with Riyadh securing a majority of 119 out of 165 votes. The Saudi delegation celebrated the victory, expressing gratitude for the international community’s trust in their vision for 2030.

Saudi Arabia’s winning bid focused on shaping a prosperous and sustainable future, showcasing plans for a major public transit network and a futuristic space with public parks, e-game facilities, performance stages, and sports venues. The project emphasizes accelerating innovations to preserve natural ecosystems. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan welcomed the vote as an expression of international trust in Saudi Arabia’s vision for 2030 and its commitment to shared prosperity.

The Expo is seen as an opportunity for Saudi Arabia to diversify its economy and boost its global standing. The country hopes to attract 40 million visitors to Riyadh through the event. The winning bid involved an extensive marketing campaign, including a “Riyadh 2030” exhibit near the Eiffel Tower in Paris. French President Emmanuel Macron officially supported the Saudi bid.

While Riyadh’s successful bid is a cause for celebration, it has faced criticism from activists citing human rights concerns, particularly in the aftermath of the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Riyadh’s Expo victory aligns with its broader efforts, led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to transform the kingdom’s economy and host major international events.

The World Expo is renowned for showcasing technological innovations and cultural achievements, dating back to 1851. Riyadh’s win positions the city as a destination for major global events, following Dubai’s hosting of the 2020 Expo in 2021. Saudi Arabia is also likely to host the men’s 2034 FIFA World Cup, reinforcing its status as a hub for international events.

The Expo decision comes as Saudi Arabia continues its push for development and modernization under Crown Prince Mohammed’s leadership. Riyadh’s successful bid underscores the country’s ambitions and its potential to become a prominent player on the global stage. The next World Expo is scheduled for Osaka, Japan, in 2025.
