Air India Express Cuts Kozhikode Operations Amidst Protests
Air India Express has announced a reduction in services from Karipur International Airport, Kozhikode, effective with the upcoming summer schedule starting in April. This decision entails a decrease in weekly services to Sharjah and Ras Al-Khaimah, with some flights being rerouted to Kannur airport. Consequently, Kozhikode airport is facing a shortfall of 2000 seats. The move by Air India Express comes amidst ongoing protests against previous changes and allegations from passenger organizations, accusing the airline of attempting to close down Karipur airport by reducing its services. This decision marks a significant shift in the airline’s operational strategy, especially since its takeover by Tata, reflecting a lack of interest in services from Karipur.
Furthermore, Air India has also ceased its Dubai-Sharjah flights and reduced domestic services, exacerbating concerns among passengers and stakeholders. These developments have sparked controversy, particularly in light of the accident involving an Air India aircraft at Karipur International Airport on August 7, 2020. Investigations revealed issues within the aircraft itself as the cause of the accident. Passenger organizations have criticized Air India’s actions, viewing them as detrimental to the future of Karipur airport, which at one point contributed 40% of the airline’s income.
