Odisha’s Unique Initiative: World’s First Melanistic Tiger Safari in the Making

In a groundbreaking move, Odisha, known for its Simlipal tiger reserve, is set to establish the world’s first melanistic tiger safari. Melanistic tigers, characterized by dense black stripes against their brown skin due to a condition called melanism, are an extremely rare variant of the Royal Bengal tiger. With only around 10 of these unique tigers found exclusively in the Simlipal reserve, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced the ambitious project to provide tourists and visitors with a glimpse of this majestic species.

The proposed melanistic tiger safari, spanning 200 hectares near Baripada and adjacent to National Highway 18, aims to showcase approximately 60% of Simlipal’s tigers that fall under this rare variant. The site, located about 15 km from the Simlipal Tiger Reserve, mirrors its landscape, offering an ideal environment. Additionally, the safari will house surplus tigers from Nandankanan Zoo and provide a haven for rescued or orphaned tigers that may not be fit for the wild but are suitable for display in an open enclosure. This initiative not only celebrates the unique biodiversity of the region but also promises to be a significant attraction for wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists alike.
