Monsoon gets intensified in Kerala : Most of the districts are under alert

Kochi : Vigorous Monsoon conditions have given incessant rains over Kerala during the last 24 hours. Rains had picked up pace over entire Kerala during the late Friday night, with extremely heavy spells all across the state. In span of 24 hours Kozhikode has recorded 150 mm of rains, Karipur 118 mm, Kochi 116 mm, Alappuzha 97 mm, Punalur 57 mm, Cannur 85 mm, and Thiruvananthapuram 27 mm.

Intense clouding is seen over the state, triggering more heavy rains throughout the day. With this, threat of flash flooding looms large, with even chances of land slides over many places.

India’s monsoon rains are 20 percent below average in the week ending on 17 July, as rainfall was scanty over the central, western and southern parts of the country, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, raising concerns over the output of summer-sown crops.

Weathermen are of the view that we can expect over 500 mm of rains over Kerala till July 22.

The weather forecasting agency has said that this spell may lead to a flood-like situation due to which red alert has already been issued by the Kerala state authorities.

Places that are likely to witness the heaviest rains are Punnalur, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Wayanad.
