Sri Lanka Unveils Free Visa Program to Boost Tourism

Sri Lanka has rolled out a significant initiative by offering free visas to travelers from India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, and Indonesia for a period of five months. This move, announced by the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ali Sabry, aims to attract more tourists and boost the tourism industry, which has been severely impacted by the double blow of COVID-19 and agricultural challenges. The visa-free travel opportunity took immediate effect and will run until March 31 of the following year, acting as a pilot project to assess its impact on tourism influx.

Sri Lanka’s decision comes as the nation grapples with the economic repercussions of the pandemic and strives to recover its tourism-driven economy. By waiving visa fees for visitors from these key countries, the government hopes to entice travelers and rejuvenate the hospitality sector. This strategic move aligns with Sri Lanka’s broader efforts to welcome tourists back, offering a glimpse of the country’s rich culture, scenic landscapes, and historical treasures, enticing travelers from diverse regions to explore the island nation.
