Extreme Heat Wave Grips Kerala, Palakkad Temperature Soars to 42 Degrees Celsius

Kerala is currently facing an extreme heat wave, expected to persist until mid-May, as per the Indian Meteorological Department’s forecast. Palakkad, a district in Kerala, is particularly affected, with temperatures soaring to a scorching 42 degrees Celsius. On Saturday, the temperature reached 41.8 degrees Celsius in Palakkad, prompting a heat wave warning. Thrissur and Punalur in Kollam district are also experiencing high temperatures, with readings expected to touch 41 degrees Celsius.

While occasional summer rains provide some relief in the evenings, they are insufficient to bring down the overall temperature. Central and southern districts of Kerala are forecasted to receive light rain over the next two days. However, there has been a significant reduction in summer rainfall across the state, with a 62 percent decrease recorded from March to April 28. Only Kottayam received average rainfall, while Malappuram witnessed a 98 percent drop in expected rainfall. Kannur, Kasaragod, and Kozhikode districts also experienced a deficit in rainfall.

A special alert has been issued for Palakkad, Thrissur, and Kollam districts due to the heat wave, warning people to avoid direct sunlight to prevent sunstroke, which can be fatal. Tragically, a 90-year-old woman succumbed to sunstroke in Palakkad recently. The rise in humidity during summer rains adds to the discomfort caused by the heat.

Palakkad: 41.6 degrees Celsius

Kollam: 38.6 degrees Celsius

Thrissur: 39.4 degrees Celsius

The heat wave is expected to persist in all 12 districts of Kerala until May 2, with Palakkad bearing the brunt at 41 degrees Celsius. In response to safety concerns raised by the Disaster Management Authority, the Women and Child Development Department has decided to suspend preschool activities in Anganwadis for a week, while other activities will continue. Supplementary nutrition for children will be provided to their homes during this period.
