Controversy Erupts as ‘Nava Kerala Sadas’ Bus Reaches Kasaragod with Lavish Amenities

The recently acquired BharatBenz model bus intended for Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and state ministers as part of the “Nava Kerala Sadas” initiative has arrived in Kasaragod, generating significant controversy. The black-colored bus, adorned with artwork showcasing various Kerala festivities and the tagline “God’s own country,” reached the district police headquarters early Saturday morning, drawing criticism primarily due to its extravagant features.

Manufactured by S.M. Kannappa Automobiles in Bengaluru, the 25-seater bus is equipped with a bio-toilet, refrigerator, and other amenities. A specially designed space for the Chief Minister, along with a seat near the driver for public interaction, adds to the luxurious features. The government’s decision to install a 180-degree rotating chair for the Chief Minister has fueled opposition criticism, particularly regarding the overall cost of the bus.

The “Nava Kerala Sadas” serves as a government outreach program, involving the Chief Minister and ministers traveling through all assembly constituencies in the state. While the initiative aims to connect with the public, opposition parties have raised concerns about the expenditure, alleging that Rs 1.05 crore has been spent on converting the Benz bus into a caravan. The controversy adds a new dimension to the government’s public engagement efforts, prompting debates on fiscal responsibility amid economic challenges.
