Kerala Government Takes Steps to Combat Rising Temperatures

In response to the soaring temperatures, the Kerala government has initiated a series of measures to mitigate the effects of the heatwave. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan chaired a high-level meeting where the decisions were made, including the closure of all educational institutions, including professional colleges, until Monday. Additionally, schools have been advised to reschedule classes to avoid direct sunlight exposure from 11 am to 3 pm on other days.

Workers in sectors such as construction, agriculture, fisheries, and other strenuous jobs have been urged to organize their work hours to minimize direct exposure to sunlight during peak hours. Furthermore, police, fire services, military units, NCC, and SPC units have been instructed to refrain from conducting drills and parades during the daytime to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Special attention has been directed towards ensuring safety in workplaces with materials such as asbestos and tin sheets, with measures in place to relocate guests residing in homes with such materials to safer locations. Fire audits are being conducted in areas prone to fire accidents, and hospitals and major government institutions are required to adhere strictly to disaster management protocols.

To address concerns related to rising temperatures, the forest department’s guidelines are being strictly followed, with measures implemented to protect livestock and wildlife from heatstroke and forest fires. Local bodies have been tasked with conducting pre-monsoon cleanliness drives, inspecting drainage systems for efficiency, and ensuring that primary regulators such as spillways and sluice gates are clear of obstructions.

Preparations for potential floods, landslides, and epidemics have been accelerated, with regular warnings and updates being disseminated through online sessions attended by high-ranking officials, including Chief Secretary Dr. Venu Rajamony and Kerala State Disaster Management Authority Secretary Sekhar Kuriakose. These proactive measures aim to safeguard the well-being of citizens and mitigate the adverse effects of the ongoing heatwave in Kerala.
