Kerala Government Intensifies Preventive Measures Against Zika Virus, Urges Caution

In response to the recent confirmation of eight Zika virus cases in Kerala’s northern Kannur district, the state government has announced intensified preventive measures while reassuring the public that there is no need to panic. Kerala’s Health Minister, Veena George, stated that the virus is typically transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes and is generally harmless. However, it poses risks to pregnant women and can lead to birth defects such as microcephaly in the fetus.

The infections were reported from the Thalassery District Court in Kannur. Following the confirmation, the district administration implemented stringent preventive steps, including monitoring pregnant women, issuing alerts, and providing guidelines to health institutions, both public and private. The first infection case was identified on October 30, prompting health authorities to organize a medical camp in the area on November 1. During the camp, 24 samples were collected and sent for testing.

To eradicate the Zika virus-carrying mosquitoes, fogging, spraying, and larval surveys were conducted in the affected area. Health workers visited 104 houses near the Thalassery District Court to assess the situation and take necessary precautions. The state’s Department of Entomology also received collected samples of Aedes larvae and mosquitoes for further analysis.

In light of these developments, the health department advised people, especially children and the elderly, to be cautious and avoid mosquito bites. While the situation is being closely monitored and preventive measures are in place, the government has emphasized the importance of public cooperation to minimize the risk of further Zika virus spread in the region.
