Kerala’s Strategic Move towards Solar Energy: New Policies and Targets

In a forward-thinking move, Kerala is set to revolutionize its energy landscape with new policies designed to harness the potential of solar energy. The state is adapting to the changing trends in the energy sector by forming an 18-member committee of experts tasked with devising strategies for the efficient utilization of solar power. Spearheaded by KR Jyothilal, the additional chief secretary of the Department of Energy, the committee comprises esteemed individuals such as Reji Kumar Pillai, president of the Indian Smart Grid Forum, IIT professor Arun Kumar from Roorkee, and Dr VK Damodaran, former director of the Energy Management Centre.

As the use of electric vehicles continues to surge, the committee’s focus extends beyond traditional solar applications. Their mission includes exploring the installation of solar panels on vehicles and investigating the feasibility of V2G (vehicle-to-grid) systems, a groundbreaking concept where electric vehicles contribute electricity back to the grid. The committee aims to submit a comprehensive policy draft to the government by February 15, outlining subsidies and concessions to incentivize E-Vehicle adoption, strategies to promote hydrogen fuel use, and recommendations for construction practices that minimize overall electricity consumption. Kerala’s strategic approach signifies a progressive step towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.
