Israel Declares War, Bombards Gaza; Death Toll Crosses 1100 on Both Sides

The Israeli government has formally declared war, authorizing “significant military steps” against Hamas following the group’s surprise attack. The conflict has resulted in a death toll exceeding 1,100 on both sides, with thousands wounded.

Israeli forces continue to battle militants holed up in several locations, with over 700 reported dead in Israel and more than 400 in Gaza. Israel deployed special forces to regain control of areas seized by Hamas, intensifying the conflict. Footage from one area shows Israeli forces engaging Hamas militants.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad claimed to have taken over 130 captives from inside Israel, including soldiers, civilians, women, children, and older adults. The captives are expected to be traded for the release of Palestinians imprisoned by Israel. Israel confirmed the “significant” number of captives.

In response, Israel targeted more than 800 sites in Gaza, including airstrikes that leveled parts of Beit Hanoun. The conflict’s escalation has led to evacuations and casualties on both sides, raising concerns about further escalation. A significant number of homes in Gaza were destroyed, and the U.N. reported tens of thousands displaced.

The conflict has also triggered concerns of regional escalation. An exchange of strikes occurred between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah group, raising fears of a broader regional war. Israel’s Security Cabinet’s declaration of war against Hamas marks a significant escalation, indicating a prolonged and intense conflict ahead.

The situation remains fluid, with ongoing military operations and diplomatic efforts in the region. Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
