Rahul Gandhi will appear Surat court today.

Gandhinagar: Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi will appear in court in Surat on Thursday in a lawsuit filed against him by a Surat legislator for allegedly defaming the Modi community by asking at a 2019 election rally, “Why do all thieves have ‘Modi’ surnames?”

Rahul will visit Surat on Thursday, according to Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Amit Chavda. “Rahul Gandhi is expected to arrive in Surat around 10 a.m. and depart at 12-12:30 p.m. His visit has nothing to do with politics and is solely for the purpose of his court appearance “Chavda remarked.

On April 13, 2019, Rahul remarked at a Lok Sabha election rally in Kolar, Karnataka, ” “How come Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, and Narendra Modi all have the same surname? Why is Modi such a common surname among thieves?”

Purnesh Modi, a state member from Surat West, had filed a defamation action against Rahul in a local court following his remark. The case was brought for violating sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code. In 2019, Rahul pleaded not guilty in a Surat court.
