Five farmers were arrested by Delhi Police for protesting and raising slogans near Parliament.

New Delhi: According to Delhi police, five farmers who were protesting and raising slogans near Parliament on July 1, 2021, were detained and taken to Parliament Street Police Station.

According to police, they were released after questioning.

However, the protesters were released after the police arrested them under Section 65 of the Delhi Police Act.

The police in New Delhi have increased security in the area as a result of the incident.

Farmers have been protesting at the national capital’s various borders since November 26 in opposition to three newly enacted farm laws: the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020; and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

The three farm laws, enacted in September, have been projected by the Centre as major reforms in the agriculture sector, removing middlemen and allowing farmers to sell their produce anywhere in the country.

Protesting farmers, on the other hand, have expressed concern that the new laws will pave the way for the elimination of the safety net of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and the abolition of the “mandi” (wholesale market), leaving them at the mercy of large corporations.

Earlier, on the seventh month of the ongoing protest, farmers staged another “tractor rally” on June 26 and delivered a memorandum to governors from all 50 states.

Farmers camped along Delhi’s Singhu, Tikri, and Ghazipur borders commemorated the day as “Save Agriculture, Save Democracy Day” to mark the end of their seven-month-long agitation.
