Delhi Schools Closed Due to Severe Cold: Students Get Extended Winter Break

Due to the prevailing cold weather conditions, schools in Delhi have been ordered to remain closed for the next five days until January 12 for students from Nursery to Class 5, according to Delhi Minister Atishi. The Delhi government had initially extended the winter break until January 10 in response to extreme cold waves and an IMD yellow alert. However, this decision was later retracted. The region has been experiencing cold to severe cold conditions, with temperatures significantly below normal, leading to the closure of schools for the safety of young students.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that cold to severe cold conditions will persist in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan for the next day, with a significant decrease thereafter. Maximum temperatures in various parts of these regions are below normal by 4-9°C. As the cold conditions continue to grip Delhi, people are seen sitting by bonfires to keep warm. The weather has also impacted other parts of North India, including Agra and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, where residents are braving the cold with layers of fog blanketing the cities. Meanwhile, rehearsals for the January 26th Republic Day parade are underway in the national capital despite the challenging weather conditions.
