Netflix Opts Out of Dedicated App for Apple Vision Pro: Limitations and Implications

In a surprising move, Netflix has decided not to release a standalone app for the highly anticipated Apple Vision Pro, set to launch in the US next month. Despite being available on Apple’s iOS, iPadOS, and tvOS, Netflix subscribers won’t have access to a dedicated app when using the Vision Pro headset. According to Bloomberg, users will stream content similarly to Mac computer users, relying on web browsers.

However, this decision comes with some limitations for Netflix users on the Vision Pro. Offline download support, limited video quality settings, and the absence of “Environments” for immersive backgrounds are among the reported drawbacks. Notably, other major streaming services, including Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and Paramount+, have committed to providing dedicated apps for the Vision Pro.

The lack of a dedicated Netflix app might impact the appeal of the $3,499 Vision Pro, particularly for users seeking a more immersive streaming experience. The headset boasts features like 2D and 3D video viewing and Spatial Audio, making it an exciting device for entertainment enthusiasts. Whether Netflix revisits its decision as the Vision Pro launches in other global markets remains to be seen. As the landscape of streaming services evolves, the absence of a major player like Netflix from a dedicated app on a cutting-edge device raises questions about the dynamics between streaming platforms and emerging technologies.
