Stricter Restrictions on Indian Students Going to Canada in the Coming Months

The Canadian government is gearing up to implement stricter measures to limit the arrival of international students, and this move is expected to impact a significant number of Indian students. According to Minister Mark Miller, the current situation is deemed out of control, prompting the need for restrictions. While the exact figure of the reduction has not been specified, Miller mentioned in an interview with Canadian media that the number of international students, currently around 9 lakh, will be limited in the coming months. As of November 2023, out of the 5,79,075 international students in Canada, 215,910 are from India. The Canadian government has been taking steps to regulate the influx of international students, and recent changes include an increased account balance requirement for students, now set at a minimum of 12.7 lakh rupees (CA$20,635), up from the previous 6.14 lakh rupees (CA$10,000).

The decision to impose stricter restrictions on international students comes as a response to the overwhelming number of students arriving in Canada for education. The focus on limiting student arrivals is expected to address concerns related to managing the current situation effectively. India, with the largest number of international students in Canada, is anticipated to feel the impact of these measures. As Canada moves to announce the percentage reduction in the coming months, it adds another layer of complexity for students planning to pursue education in the country. The increased financial requirement, coupled with potential limitations on the number of students, underscores the evolving landscape for international education in Canada.
